Valley Gutter Pointing

Rayco Roofing can seal the edges of valley gutters by applying either a cement or flexible pointing compound to the edges of the tiles, between the tiles and steel valley gutter.

Roof valley gutter pointing refers to the process of sealing or reinforcing the gaps in the valley gutter of a tiled or shingled roof. A roof valley is the V-shaped channel formed where two sloping roof planes meet, typically directing rainwater into a gutter or downspout. The “pointing” involves applying or repairing mortar, sealant, or a flexible bedding compound to secure roof tiles or components and ensure the valley remains watertight.

Why is it necessary or useful?

  • Prevents Leaks: The valley is a critical area where water flow is concentrated. Proper pointing ensures the valley gutter is sealed, preventing water from seeping under tiles or into the roof structure, which could cause leaks, rot, or structural damage.
  • Protects Against Weather: Valleys are exposed to heavy water flow, debris, and weathering. Pointing with durable, weather-resistant materials (like flexible mortar or silicone-based sealants) protects against erosion and damage from rain, wind, or UV exposure.
  • Extends Roof Lifespan: By maintaining the integrity of the valley, pointing prevents damage to the roof’s underlayment, battens, or framework, reducing the need for costly repairs and extending the roof’s overall lifespan.
  • Improves Drainage: Well-maintained valley gutter pointing ensures smooth water flow, preventing pooling or blockages that could lead to overflows or damage.
  • Maintains Structural Integrity: In tiled roofs, pointing secures tiles in the valley, preventing them from shifting or dislodging during storms or high winds.
